FLORIDA MAN GETS 30 YEARS FOR DISTRACTED DRIVING CASE THAT KILLED 9-YEAR-OLD BOY IN BROOKSVILLE.
Gregory Andriotis, 40, was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 30 years in prison for causing a deadly crash while using his cell phone, resulting in the death of Logan Scherer and serious injuries to his parents and sister.
The judge put emphasis on the fact that Andriotis consciously disregarded life by choosing to not pay attention while driving.
This particular case was the first texting and
driving trial in The State of Florida and led to new texting and driving laws.
Just hours before the sentencing in Hernando County, Andriotis, who is a husband and father of two, spoke publicly for the first time since the 2016 crash. He apologized to the victim's family, expressing remorse and the desire to trade places with Logan.
“I wish more than anything that I could change what happened that day. I would gladly trade places with him if it meant he would live," Andriotis said. "Logan deserved to
live a full life. I took that away from him and I took him away from you."
The family's SUV was parked in traffic on I-75 near Brooksville when Andriotis slammed into them. The force of the accident pushed six cars nearly 76 feet. Investigators later determined he was going almost 80 miles per hour before impact.
A nationwide legal precedent was set for deadly crashes caused by cell phone related distracted driving as a result of the guilty verdict and vehicular
homicide charge.
Bringing a sense of closure and peace to the victim's family, the family hopes that their efforts and sentencing will create a positive impact and honor Logan's memory.
